    Drains backing up
All the drains in my mobile home are backing up. I used a Zep product to dissolve hair clogs about 2 weeks ago. I washed clothes Sunday and the next day the drains seemed slow but still draining. The third day, today, all the drains are backing up: flush commode and water comes up in bathtub and gurggling sounds in the basin and kitchen sink; run water in the tub and the commode and basin gurggle; run water in the kitchen sink and it backs up and I hear gurggling in the bath, not sure which drain. Should I get something at Home Depot to open the drains or call a plumber?

    Hi Jasmine,
Sounds like the problem's outside in the sewer line and it needs to be cleared. Are you in a mobile home park or are you on a septic tank? If on a septic system does the tank need to be pumped, is the drain field working properly? If in a park, contact the park mananger. Good luck, Tom

We just moved into a home that was built in the 1960's. The owner didn't know where the clean out is. Do you know where to look for it? We have non flushing comodes and backup in bath tub. Kitchen sink is fine.

"The owner didn't know where the clean out is. Do you know where to look for it?"

Code mandates that we install a cleanout not over 18" out from the house foundation. You will find it where the sewer pipe exits you home.

"We have non flushing comodes and backup in bath tub"

this tells me the blockage is downstream from the bathtub and most likely in the house so the outside cleanout wouldn't do you any good. Rent a power snake and send it down the lavatory roof vent. Let the cable drop the the base of the vent and snake out about 16" more. Afterwards flush the line out with a garden hose. Good luck, Tom

Backing up! [ 2 Answers ]

My shower, bathtub and toilet were all backing up - I called my home insurance program and when the plumber came he said I wasn't covered (of course) because it was a root problem. He said he would have to use a camera to see the problem, and suggested it would cost $1000 +/- to fix. He then said...
