    State tax MA/NJ
I am a MA resident and filing the state tax return of MA. I had an income from NJ source in 2006. My question is: Do I need to file NJ tax return as a non-resident for that NJ source income?

    Thanks!

Assuming you were a MA resident while you earned money in NJ, then yes, you would need to file a non-resident tax return for NJ and a resident return for MA. If on the other hand, you were a resident of NJ while ypu worked there, and then moved to MA where you are now, then you would file as a part-year resident for both states. Hope this helps.

If you spent NO time in NJ while earning the NJ-sourced income, file as a non-resident alien but do NOT claim the NJ income on the NJ return.

NJ has NO right to tax you on that income just because it came from a NJ company.
