Are you sure it is SSA and not a scam?

Social security would not "owe" you anything, unless you are retiring and then you would not contact the store.

If you have some private retirement fund, you would contact the company that managed your money. You would have paid private money into a fund. (think of a savings account for retirement). If that is the case, you would "move" the money to another fund.

Also there are scams where people get emails, and sometimes letters, saying they are due money, but have to pay for them.

If you can print or copy, the exact words of the letter it may help.

When you file for your social security benefit, the SSA will notify of any companies where you have a pending retirement benefit. When you leave a company's employ with a vested benefit, that company is required to report it to the SSA.

If you worked for Burger King and left with a vested benefit, this might be what the letter is about. The letter should give you a point of contact. Unless you worked for a company owned store, you should be contacting the franchise holder.

However, I'm concerned about the wording. Who tried to contact you? Who is asking you to call? Did you file for social security?
