    Post footings on concrete slab
    I want to build a detached carport by the side of my existing signal family house. The size of the carport in 22'x22'. There is a 6" thick concrete slab about 6' wide from the outside wall of the house. So two of carport posts will be sit on the concrete slab. My county (in Maryland) requires footings to be 30" below grade (frost line). To meet the requiement I have to break throug the concrete slab. So my question is: Can I just anchor the posts on the concrete slab using metal connectors? Thanks

    Not a good idea. There is a reason why there is a 30" requirement (in MD) that slab its going to move up and down as the ground freezes and thaws. Your house won't. So you see where I'm going with that. Make it wider so you CAN anchor the posts as needed. 6' is barely wide enough to get a SMALL car in anyway much less leave room to open a door, you REALLY want at least another 3 feet in width.

    My driveway is 6" thick over a 12" compacted gravel base....I can see it move up and down a total of 2 inches between hot and dry summer months vs the coldest weeks of winter where it meets my garage door as I have a solid stable reference point to see it. And that is in Northern VA.

    Agree, you would not get a permit for this. The carport would float but not your house.
