Depends on where it is located and type of material. Can you tell us where it is loxcated and what function it provides?

There is and was Asbestos in so many houses in the past. It as a practical issue safe unless it is broken up and fibers get into the air. It was used in insulation in public schools, siding of houses, sewing factories had it all over steam and ironing operations and 100's of other places.

So, where is yours ?

The only way to know if you have a problem is to have your environment tested by a professional, and take appropriate steps. If you KNOW it's is in your house or work area, then you need to consider having it removed properly.

"Is it safe to live with". Depends on where, what type and condition. EPA and OSHA defines "Friable and non friable asbestos". Using the link supplied with Talanimans post, note that is says "if in good condition and not damaged, leave it alone". Vinyl asbestos tile is left in place and recovered, not torn up. Old duct sealing tape and pipe lagging can be sealed and left in place. As a retired chemist and Industrial Hygienist, I can tell you that it is best left in place and covered. Tearing out old asbestos is very costly. I worked with Dr. Irving Selikoff, now deceased, back in the 70's and 80's. He was the primary antagonist to get Asbestos controls in place. However, in studies I did with him at Yale University, he/we realized that the ensuing concern and subsequent asbestos removal, typically without proper controls, exposed more people and generated more asbestos that leaving it in place and encapsulating it. Don't let someone tell you how" you will die" if you don't remove it. That is not EPA's position.
