I am looking for treatment for my 44 yr old son with alcohol addiction. Antabuse has many negative side effects, especially depression. I have heard of an injectable treatment. What can you tell me?

I don't think it's wise for you to be looking for treatments for a grown child. He needs to want and to find what is best for him himself. If he isn't attending DAILY meetings of AA or another group, on his own, by his own choice and wishes, then no treatment is going to last. If he is living with you, you need to send him away. If you want to fund ONE rehab or halfway house, then do so.

Why would you think that an injection is any different from something taken orally? And why would you assume that cessation of drinking even without any drug isn't going to have side effects? Any withdrawal has side effects, and depression is common, regardless of how you are treated. Staying away from alcohol is over 90% a life and thinking change, nothing to do with drug treatment. And it's every minute of every day.

There no easy cure for alcohol abuse, no Magic pill and if someone is offering such it is an all out scam.

Your son, as joy said, has to WANT his life back without booze. AA has helped thousands of men and women get back on track. My ex husband for one, and I watched his dedication to the AA process. An alcoholic is never cured of the need, they are taught at AA how to say NO and mean it.

There are the health hazards, liver disease for one example.

There are chapters of AA everywhere. What you could do is attend meetings with him to show your support !

The trouble with antibase and other chemical treatments is that the person often just starts back drinking, as soon as they stop the treatment. The issue is desire, willpower and wanting to stop drinking.

The question here is, does your son, want to stop drinking? Family can never make them stop. AA has about the best recover record of anything, (aside from some Christian based programs but these are often merely local programs and not easy to find)

The chemical treatment is normally best with both a residential treatment program that includes counseling and other help.

I think you should take a broader approach to your son's problem and educate YOURSELF to what he suffers from so you will have a better idea how to deal with him, and his problem.
