What does small crackling sound indicate when resetting tripped breaker?
Power was off so I checked breakers. Reset a couple. When I pushed on them to flip back on, they made a small crackling sound before power came back on.

Don't know but any kind of crackling sound would be caused by arcing. Look for loose connections.

As HK says, cracking means arcing. Arcing causes the loose connections so this is not something that can be repaired. Either the panel or possibly just breakers must be replaced.
It's rare to see a situation where you get away cheaply in cases like this. Sorry.

Loud crackling sound in ceiling. [ 1 Answers ]

I have an older home, 1960. There are often crackling sounds coming from the joists holding up the ceiling. It seems to be somewhat related to temperature variations when the heater turns on. It's lucky for me that I see no cracks in the drywall to support that this is from settling. I would...
