In box 14 on my W-2 form the amounts my employer has taken out for the last 6 years exceeds the state max. deduction for SUI and SDI. Can they do this? Aren't they supposed to stop deducting from my pay once I reach the max deduction for category?

SDI and SUI go by state, and don't follow the income limits that FICA does. Talk to your employer about your state amounts/maximum, then contact your state through their website to confirm.

It's possible that something is wrong here, but not too likely.

Box 14 can be for whatever an employer wants to put there, but that doesn't mean they can deduct whatever they want.

I agree with Joy. Verify the max amounts; the information can probably be found on the state tax website.

If your employer is in fact withholding too much, contact him about getting a refund of the excess withholding.

Petlux - what state do you work in? If NJ, the rates for 2014 are:

SUI: 0.425% on the first $31.5K of wages, or $133.88 max
SDI: 0.38% on the first $31.5K of wages, or $119.70 max

Has your employer taken more than these amounts from your pay? If so, I believe you can get it back as a refund when you file your NJ-1040 state income tax return.
