Does cold water pipe go to the hot water heater before they get in to a house?
    Hi,

I'm buying a new house, but a part of the water pipe connecting to the hot water heater is missing. I want to know which option is true for most houses:
    a. after the cold water come from outside, all water go to hot water heater first, then divide to hot water and cold water

    b. a pipe supplying the cold water will go to the house first, and another pipe for hot water will take cold water to the hot water heater, then goes to the hot water pipe in the house.

Cuz if a is the case, I even cannot test the cold water supply in the house in the inspection.

    Thank you very much

Before we start I need more information. I don't see a missing pipe. I see a copper pipe that looks like a cold water supply. You say this is a new house but it never would passed inspection or been CO'd if the heater wasn't connected. You ask about how we pipe a house. We come into a house with a 3/4" main Depending on where the heater is setting we tee off a 3/4" supply for the heater. We then continue on with the cold water main and branch off 1/2" to supply the fixtures.. Hot water's piped the same. Are you saying that in a new house you turn on the hot water tap and nothing comes out? Help me to understand your problem, Back to you . Tom
