Which form to use - 1040 or 1040NR? CAn TurboTax be used?
I came to US in Feb, 2005 on L1-B visa and finally left in Oct, 2006. In between these dates I went back to India a number of on vacation. My employer issued me a W2 for year 2005 and arranged a tax preparer to file the return. During that time the tax preparer had filed my return as Dual Status and I remember filling up a 1040NR form as well.

I came back to India in Oct, 2006 and I have my W2 form for the year 2006 from my employee. Do I need to file year 2006 return as dual status again? And which form should I file - 1040/1040NR/Other?

Also is it possible for me to use TurboTax to file the US return even though I have retuned back to India?

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Parvez

Yes, you need to file an expatriate dual-status return. You file BOTH Forms 1040 and 1040NR.

No, you cannot use TurboTax or any other tax software for this return. It is a special return that must be prepared manually, preferably by a tax professional with experience in preparing such returns.
