We just had our fridge worked on and when the technician removed the cover over the top shelf that houses the freezer and fridge thermostats and defrost timer, there was a wiring diagram tucked into the back of the hidden compartment. Don't know if that is standard procedure or not.

That unit is super simple. All you have is a light on a door switch and wiring to the compressor through the thermostat. Here are some manuals: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ata_Manual.pdf

Using an ohm meter test the compressor's three terminals. The highest reading will be between start and run, then common and start, and the lowest is common to run. It's important to also test between all terminals and ground. On the ohm meter's highest setting put one lead on a terminal and the other one on a copper tube. If you get any reading then the compressor is bad and can explode into flames and burning oil under pressure. That's why you always have the cover on the compressor terminals before applying power to it. I have had this happen with a large AC compressor. It's not a nice sight. When wiring an older compressor it is best to get an electronic kit with the capacitor included. All you do is hook three wires to common, start, and run then the black to hot and the white to neutral and you are done. Just make sure to use your meter and make sure you have the hot wire coming from the thermostat. Nothing to it.
