[Silly choices]

Tonight I was caught shoplifting; a stupid mistake and I am ashamed if myself.
I was caught by the store security guard who lead me to a back room. I willingly have the items I took (value of less than $30), cooperated as much as I could as I didn't want any more trouble than I was already in. After her "interrogation" she said they were not pressing changes as I admitted to taking the items and cooperated the entire way through. She said I was not being arrested, I will receive a letter in the mail for a fine I will have to pay (I think she said something about civil). The police arrived shortly after who again said I was not being arrested/charged, they were called to confirm that I didn't have a criminal record, no unpaid tickets, just to validate my identity. The police officer went through my purse, frisked me. As the security guard was French and didn't speak any English, my 1st language, I asked the police officer to confirm what she had said. Everything was correct, no arrest, no criminal record, no court appearance, I would receive a letter with a fine and if I was ever caught stealing again, at that point I would be arrested.
Again, I know what I did was foolish, I was trembling the entire time, I am embarrassed and know that I will never do this again.
What I am wondering is the amount if this fine, has anyone been in a similar situation with no arrest? How long did it take to receive the fine? How much? Any information would be appreciated even if I really don't deserve it. Thanks.

Fine is not really the right word, although they use it, to help intimidate you.

It is a civil penalty, not associated with the police or the courts.

You will be paying the store a fee or penalty for being caught.

It is normally from 300 to 600 dollars.

You should receive the paper from the store within 6 weeks.
