Hi the way my house is setup is I have both my bathrooms on one side of my house which are back to back of eathother. On the opposite end of the house I have a laundry room and a storage room on the other side of it which also contains my water heater. I would like to install a urinal and a sink in that storage room because when I have people come over for pool parties they have to walk through the whole house wet to go to the bathroom and I would like to avoid that. My laundry room and storage room have a door that goes right out to my back patio where the pool is so I thought if I could put a urinal there I wouldn't have to worry about wet people walking through the whole house to go to the bathroom. I know I have a water supply from the laundry room and water heater and there is also the drain for the laundry machine on the opposite side of the wall my question is this. Is it against code to install a urinal using the water line of the water heater and laundry machine and also connecting to the drain of the laundry machine? I live in Arizona. Thanks

A urinal may help with the guys, but it certainly won't reduce the number of girls/women traipsing through the house, for sure! Anyway, a urinal requires a 2" drain and 1.5" vent and it can probably hook into a 2" MINIMUM washer drain, but piping the drain/vent will be a bit tricky with a washer hookup, but it should be able to be done. I can't speak to plumbing code in your area specifically as some towns/cities have their own code interpretation so you are best to call the local plumbing inspector and ask him/her this question to be 100% sure!

The water supply will need to be 3/4" for a flushometer unless you install a "WATERLESS" urinal, but I can't speak to those as I have yet to install one, but you can look it up and see if they are acceptable for your area. You can hook into the cold water supply of the water heater if you decide to install a urinal flushometer valve, but again, the water pipe will need to be a 3/4" pipe to feed the urinal flushometer valve, OK?

Waterless urinals in my opinion are messy and not maintenance free. The cartridges need to replaced in a timely manner otherwise the urinal drainline will collect the uric acid buildup and then you need to pull it in order to snake the drain. The cartridges are anywhere from $30-40 each. Then since you do not have any water rinsing/cleaning the porcelain, it must be cleaned on a regular basis. I have removed many of these urinals just to run a new water supply and add a new .5gpf urinal. They have their place like a golf course restroom or in a campground restroom in remote locations.
