    Air in water pipes?
Hi, I have knocking in my pipes when I try to get hot water in the kitchen faucet. Opening an upstairs faucet that's directly above will temporarily stop it. I cannot use my dishwasher because even when I get the knocking to stop, hot water won't get inside. I did get the knocking to stop by turning off the main water, opening all faucets, and flushing aii toilets. After six days the knocking came back. Several months earlier I replaced the water heater. What do you think is wrong and how to fix it? Thank You, Rob

    Hi Rob

My guess is that you didn't completely drain the water from the AIR CHAMBERS (shock absorbers/water hammer arrestors) in the walls. Here, you do what you did and then you leave the valves open for a half hour to an hour or so...really let the air get into the air chambers and displace the water that has accumulated in the tubes. Then turn water back on and see how long it lasts this time! Some people will even disassemble the shut off valves under the sink, but I don't think that is necessary in most cases.

    Back to you...

Hi Rob. I believe you left me a tip. If I am correct, I wanted to say THANK YOU. It is nice when someone takes a minute to "pay it forward"...:)

I am curious as to when this knocking occurs. Does it occur when you turn the water off or while the water is running? Also does the same knocking occur while using cold water?

Are you on a municipal water system or a well?
