I have an old Fasco B2451 wall heater in our bathroom. The fan recently stopped working on a consistent basis. It tries to run then stops. The heating coils still work fine. How do I find a replacement fan for this old unit? Or do I need to install an entire new heater?

That all depends on the cost of the new motor.

First, you have to determine the type and size of the motor you have and the cost of replacement.

If it looks like the motor shown below, and I suspect it does, it is a little fractional horsepower, shaded pole motor. These are great little motors that will run forever. About the only thing that can go wrong is, that because they have a low starting torque and because they are used infrequently in a high humidity areas, corrosion can develop around the shaft where it passes through the bearings. Because it has such low starting torque, it can't over come the resistance caused by the corrosion.

It should be easily removed. They are also easily dissembled. Remove and take the fan blade off, probably just pulls off. Remove the rotor by removing a couple screws. With some fine sand paper, lightly sand the shaft, where it passes through the bearings and lubricate. Reassemble, will run again for years.

Probably only two screws holding rotor in. You almost can't screw up reassembly.

Do not use WD-40 or no stick cooking sprays for a lubricant. WD-40 is not a lubricant and indeed becomes sticky after it dries. No stick cooking sprays also become sticky when they dry. Use a light weight machine oil.

Thanks. I ordered and received a fan motor. Your information was very helpful. Now I have a problem about the wiring. My old fan only had two wires coming from the fan motor. A black one on each side. One attached to the wiring on the "on-fan-heat" buttons. The other wire went to the other side of the fan. The new fan motor had red, white and black wires that were attached together at their end in a plastic plug in. How can I wire this new motor into my old heater? Can I splice the three wires and attach them to the wiring in the heater? If so, I need to know where each wire goes. Which color goes to the fan switch, etc..
