    Ceiling fan won't spin
I have a mercator grange ceiling fan and last night it made a loud noise and now won't spin. The light still comes on and it's getting power. It makes a terrible noise if the fan is turned on. It was put in by a licensed electrician. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Bad bearing in the fan motor, shorted armature, something broke that is stopping the motor. See if it spins freely when pushed by hand.

Sounds like an electrical issue if it spins by hand. Most ceiling fans are capacitor start and you may be hearing the motor struggle if the cap is bad. Unfortunately fans are so discounted these days by HD and Lowe's, it doesn't pay to repair.

Thanks again for your detailed reply and for sharing your wisdom. I'll give the electrician a call as the fan is only a week old.
