Which gender German Shepherd should I get first?
    Hi All:

We'd like to become a two German Shepherd dog family when our current dog passes. From advice on the Internet it seems that the best combination is a male and a female spaced 5 years apart. However, we can't find any advice on which gender to get first or if it matters. What do you think?

    Thanks,
    Stuart (CA)

I don't think it really matters. I have gone from living with a household of 4 girls (with absolutely no problems) to a house hold with two boys and two girls.

Honestly it comes down to personal preference. I, for one, like girls.. They just listen better and act more civilized. But that is my own opinion based on my own experience.

As far as the age gap... I think as long as you get your dogs a year apart, you should be OK. The main concern is that the dog will bond too much with one another and won't see you as pack leader. That can make things more difficult.

Another thing to consider.. When you start with whichever gender first, realize that the other dog may choose which gender you go with 2nd time around. Some dogs do well with the opposite gender only, some it doesn't seem to matter what you get.

Are you planning on buying from a breeder? Or go through a rescue. There is a major difference if you choose either one.

    Good luck in your findings!
