    RO and ice machine
I have a 50 gpd RO linked to an ice machine and the RO runs continuously, but the machine doesn't make ice. Any suggestions?

    Hello Rhausmann,

Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) systems waste lots of water to produce very small amount of filtrated water. The ration is about 96 to 4, meaning, it uses 96 gal of water to produce 4 gal of filtrated water. It takes about 24 hours to fill your filtrated water storage tank. Therefore, yes, R.O. Systems run almost continuously to satisfy the demand.

Depending on your system, the storage tank will hold about 2 gal of filtrated water. You are not saying whether your R.O. System is used for any other dispenser or for icemaker only. If you have a dispenser spout on top of your sink and use it frequently than your storage tank is low on filtrated water and will not have enough in storage to refill your icemaker tray. Also, if there is high demand for ice, R.O. System may not be able to supply enough water as dictated by the demand.

Moreover, R.O. Systems have other pre-filter(s) that need to be changed periodically - about 1x a year. If this filter is clogged up with sediment, it will not produce filtrated water resulting in empty storage tank.

Lastly, your refrigerator may have a water filter built in. That filter may be dirty resulting in inadequate water supply.

Hope that helps... Back to you... Milo
