First, hire a lawyer. Signing over your parental rights will not necessarily terminate your having to paying support, unless the stepmom wants to adopt your children. A lawyer can help you figure out your options. Do you think their stepmother would want to legally adopt them?

I don't know about that one, but my guess is yes. A lawyer can answer that. It may be wise to ask your lawyer if you should consent to the adoption first, then terminate your rights. It won't do you much good if you terminate first and they decide to keep collecting child support and delay the adoption.

Ok, while the idea of a parent caring so little for their children they will give them up, not to see them. Is beyond me.

But if you give up your rights for a step parent to adopt, once they adopt, you no longer have to pay child support.

** sorry for the preaching but my 7 year old is playing in front of me, and nothing could stop me from spending time with him, Even when my older boys were young and their mom tried hard to keep me from them, even having me arrested when I showed up to pick them up on my visittion days, giving them up was never even a choice to discuss.
If you don't see them, it is your choice, since non custody parents can get visitation.

I think if this is honestly for the best interest of the children, then you are doing the right thing. I do agree with the previous post stating "I don't know how you could give up rights to your own child". But I don't think any of us are in a place to judge if you are doing it for the good of the kids! And the step mom really wants to take on that role that you can't take on, I think that is great for the kids sake!!

Well for staters, you need to be where they are, get a job where they are and NOT GIVE UP YOUR RIGHTS!! Sorry, can't help it, if you want to feel guilty all your life then go through with it. I really think this is a money issue. You made these children. Write down the pros and cons of letting them go. If you still want to let them go then the last poster was right, you should not have rights to them anyway. I wish you the best.

This is very easy, if you merely give up your rights and no step parent does not adopt, you have to keep paying child support.

Just giving up your rights, does not do away with a legal obligation to pay child support.

And I guess to answer why you should have to pay, you are not paying for visitation rights, what you are paying for is to help pay for the expenses of YOUR childredn.
