Very Loud AC Compresser when it first starts
    Howdy,
    I have a Luxaire model HBBD-F048B.
My problem is when the Outside unit turns on, it's making a like loud chattering
Sound and after about 15 to 25 sec (Est) it quiets down. The compressor is
A I think SCROLL Compressor. It does what it's supposed to do and is keeping
Us very comfortable.. It will freeze your butt out of our house if you let it.. But any
    Ways, is the
    1. Compressor going out?
    2. Could it be the Cap not letting the current go to both legs?
3.Will I eventually need a hard start kit?

    Thank You

Could be a bad contactor, chattering as it tries to start. Once the compressor load goes down, the contactor can seat. Check to see if the contacts are pitted or burned.

What you see when you open your condensing unit is not the actual compressor. What you are seeing is the "can" or enclosure of the compressor motor and pump. In side the can is the actual electric motor and pump. That is why it is called a hermetically seal unit. The motor and pump are suspended by springs inside the can. If one or more of those spring break, the motor and pump can bang against the side of the can when the motor starts.

Usually this last for about 3-5 seconds. No repair and nothing you can do about it. If your knocking or banging truly last for 15 to 25 seconds, you may have more than one broken spring.

The compressor may quit tomorrow or it may last indefinitely. One of my units has been knocking for about 15 years. Only thing you can do, is start saving for a new condensing unit.

Is it definitely coming from the compressor, or could it be the fan blades impacting something? If one of the mounts are broken I've taken some anti-vibration pads and wedged them underneath the compressor itself and this practically eliminates the noise.

Loud buzz when central A/C starts [ 1 Answers ]

Each time my central A/C starts, there is a loud buzz for 1 second. The unit is new and works fine - just wondering if this is unusual. I've been told its probably the relay sending power out to the outside condenser. Anyone else familiar with this?
