    Can I install a toilet where a bath used to be?
    Hi from Down Under.

    My brother and I have allocated $5k - 7k for a bathroom/toilet refit inc labor costs and materials. We want to install a toilet where a bath used to be. Can this be done? At this stage no work has been done and this are the issues I think we'll have to tackle:

    1. What permission must be obtained by the local authorities - supporting documents/plans from architect/engineer;
    2. How much work can my brother and I do (to save costs considering the level of diy we have is zilch);
    3. How many hours should we expect to have to pay for a professional to remove the bath tub, install the necessary pipes (if any);

    Thanks for taking the time to read through.

    Are you asking if you can put a new toilet where the existing bathtub is? If so, you can do it, but the 1.5" drain for the tub will be way too small for the toilet. Here, for you to have a toilet in that area, you will need to get a 3" drain pipe over to the spot you want the new toilet and you will need to find a way to vent the toilet with a 2' pipe (tub vent is only 1.5").

    Where is the existing toilet in relation to the fixtures in your pictures?

    Is there a basement below the bathroom?

    Finally, to answer your questions:

    1) You will need to hire a plumber to pull a plumbing permit... homeowner's cannot usually pull a plumbing permit

    2) I just can't speak to what you can do if you have "zilch" DIY experience... have to figure that as you go along, I guess.

    3) Again, no clue as I have no idea where any of your pipes are or what is involved in your particular job. I suggest you get 3 estimates for the work and proceed to make your decisions after that.

    More questions, just let me know?

    Do the demo and debris removal yourselves; hire the plumber.
