    Repainting Cedar shingle siding
I would like to repaint my home (ranch style). The house is currently painted red with Olympic Stain that is faded and in some cases peeled to expose bare cedar shingles. I'd like to do this myself to save money and because it is ranch style and not too high, I feel I can handle it. Can anyone that has experience help me and what product do you recommend? Thank you

Cedar is difficult to finish because the oils in the wood don't give a good bond. Oil based finishes are best, not Latex. Your house is not "painted " it is stained.
Consider lightly pressure washing and then staining with a high quality oil based finish if the existing finish is oil based or Latex based stain. Is the current finish oil based or Latex?

Thank you for responding. I believe the original finish was oil based stain, but later on I think a coat of some kind of a latex finish was applied. A couple of years ago I purchased a couple of gallons of Olympic Stain (Navaho Red) but I don't think it is the same as the original. I think they did something to stains to make them less toxic to the environment and in doing so lost some of the qualities of pure stain.
    Thanks

You should not stain over a latex or oil based paint.

The peeling shows that a paint was used. You may be lucky and the whole house was not painted.

When staining it should dry to the touch very fast. If it does not then you have a paint that is stopping penetration.
