We have a terrible chemical smell coming from our basement but once I'm down there, it's impossible to find the source because the entire basement smells. At times it is so bad that it gives me asthma, and I don't even suffer from Asthma! What can be causing the smell?

Here are the details...

The home is brand new (Charlotte, NC). The walk-out "basement" is poured concrete and unfinished, but it does have insulation, electrical, and plumbing. One of the 2 HVAC units is down there but the smell doesn't get worse as you get closer.

I wish I could describe the smell but I truly can't put my finger on it. It doesn't smell like the usual suspects (solvents, gas... etc), but more like "concrete", for want of a better term.

We've tried to air the place out, even placing a fan at the door to blow in sometimes, and then other times blowing out.

I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

It sounds like new concrete smell!
But that doesn't smell like chemicals to me? More of a wet gritty dusty smell... maybe your builder added something to it.
Concrete is mysterious. Even though it can be built on in a few days or so, it goes through tiny changes for the next 20 years, mostly becoming more porous. It actually averages 18% air bubbles.
If it's totally dry, buy a clear sealer (5 gallon size) and apply with a paint roller.
To find out if it's dry enough, cut a piece of heavy mil plastic about 20" square and tape carefully to a spot on the floor with duct or gorilla or other good tape. Wait 48 hours and see if any moisture is under it. If there is, you should leave it for now.

Thanks much for your response. I would say the closest smell I can equate to is concrete but I don't work with it all the time so I wasn't sure :) - it just smells "chemical".

I think they used fibers within the concrete but other than that I'm not sure. We're in the process of contracting to have the basement finished so I won't try to seal it as you suggest, although it is a great suggestion.

I'll speak to the contractor and see what they say, and also call the builder and inquire about it.

I was just afraid it could be something other than concrete that I should be concerned about.

Before you put in a finished basement, do the moisture test, especially if this is the rainy season in NC.
There are many new techniques for finished basements, and they are improving all the time.
I hope you find someone who knows them.
