    I am really surprised that you can't find this answer; our whole culture both Canadian and US has developed around this problematic area and it is not resolved in Canada to this day.

    Independence was declared when the US was a tiny portion of the east coast. Vast numbers of different Indian tribes populated at least 80% of the country and had never met a Brit, much less helped them.
