When your mother died did she have a will? If so, did her will give everything to her husband (your stepfather)?
You say there are no blood relatives - does that mean he has no siblings, nieces, nephews, aunys, uncles, etc? My understanding of British Law is that if he died without a valid will as a stepchild you have virtually no standing in inheriting any of your stepfather's estate.

My understanding is that if your mother died intesteate then your stepfather would have inherited all her physical possesions, plus the first 250,000 GBP of financial assets, and an life interst in half of anything above that; her children (you) would have inherited half of anything above the 250,000 GBP amount. Now that he has died his estate passes to his heirs. Yoo say he has no living siblings, but what about nieces and nephews? They're the ones who are first in line to inherit his estate.

The intestacy laws of most places, and I believe England would be included, is that then the property goes to more distant relatives: parents, nieces and nephews, first cousins, etc. But step-children do not inherit.
