Did you flush the faucet when you removed the cartridge?
If not remove the cartridge turn on the water for a second shut the water install the cartridge and try, good luck.

Thanks John,
Let me try an clarify what I did because I'm obviously not much of a plumber. My shower faucet was leaking a steady stream of water so I turned the water off, pulled out the old valve and inserted the new one. When I turned it back on nothing came out.
When I turned the water back off to remove the new valve, a little water came out but just a little.

Did you turn the shut off valve back on while you had the cartridge out to flush the valve? Are you using the main shut off valve to the house to turn the water off? Do you have water at other places in the house?

Hi, thanks for your advice and help. To answer your questions
No, I didn't turn the water back on when I had the cartridge out
Yes, I am using the main shut off valve to the house
Yes, water everyplace but the shower--including water in the bathroom sink and toilet.
Gosh, I hope I didn't really screw something up...

I'm sure you didn't. Just trying to figure out why you wouldn't be getting water out shower. Suggest you remove cartridge and have some one turn on water briefly to flush out valve. Briefly means just long enough for some water to come out valve. That will flush out any obstruction that may be in valve and confirm that water is getting to valve.
Then reinstall the cartridge.
Post back if that doesn't make things work.
First, remove handle and turn cartridge 180 degrees, reinstall handle and see if you get water. Is this a Posi-Temp valve.

Harold,
Thank you! When I turned the valve 180 degrees water started flowing.. Now, the hot water pressure is weak. I don't want to touch it again until I get your expert advice!
Thanks much,
Burt

So far you did very good, now shut the water and remove the cartridge one more time turn on the water to flush out any debris left in the hot port, clean the cartridge use some silicone grease, install the cartridge check if it is OK, if not you would need to exchange the cartridge, please see the images below and tell us which one is yours and we will tell you more, Thanks.

Reversing your valve 180 degrees should only cause your hot and cold faucets to switch. John and I are probably both thinking you may have gotten the wrong Moen cartridge, they make several and they all look alike to nonplumbers

You guys are the best! It's working fine-- and I'm a hero with my kids now... lol! What I did was reverse the direction of the 180 degree turn from clock wise to counter clockwise so in essence I made a 360 degree turn. I turned the water back on and it's working fine! Thanks again. BTW, the valve is a moen 12801
