Sears gas floor furnace model T38-73742
The pilot light on my old (40 yr?) Sears Gas Floor Furnace will light but will not stay lit when I release the safety button. I suspect either the igniter or gas valve. It has worked satisfactorily up until this year.

I have been unable to find any HVAC/plumbing company in the Dallas area that will agree to inspect/service it.

    Can you make any suggestions?

    Thanks for your assistance.

    Hi Bettis

If you can light the pilot, but it won't stay lit when you release the button on the gas valve then most likely your THERMOCOUPLE (see image) is bad. The nice thing here is that the part costs about $13.00 and is also really easy to swap out if you have basic mechanical skills!

Thermocouple attaches at the bottom of the gas valve (not too tight) and ends at the pilot flame with the thermocouple "bulb" in the pilot flame)

Try replacing that... should get you up and running!

Old gas fired Sears floor furnace model #138-737630. Local HVAC said (only pulled top grid off - did not go under house and look at it) it needed a gas valve which would probably be around $500.00 for the parts and labor. Also said I should replace unit ($2709.00 for new unit) or around $10,000...
