    What's wrong with my dog?
I have a 5 year old English bulldog. Starting last night he all of a sudden got up from bed and stared pacing on the bed like he was scared to jump off the bed. Then once I got him down he just walked around the entire house smelling everything like he was looking for something. This lasted about 5 to 10minutes before he laid down and went back to bed. Now this morning he is at it again. He won't stop walking around the house sniffing the air and when he gets up on the couch he acts like he is afraid to jump down when normally he jumps off and on like nothing. What could be wrong?

Could be he smelt something and at that same time a noise or something startled him. He is then thinking what he smelt is something to be nervous about. My dog has acted like that before as well. As long as he is not in pain, eating well, pooping and peeing well I would not worry. If any of them are going on as well maybe a vet check up would be in order. It is tough as a dog owner that they can not tell us what is up with them.

Dogs not wanting to jump down or up on things typically indicates pain. Neck and back pain will shoot down into the legs and will prevent a dog from wanting to continue normal activities. Seeing as how he is a bull dog and was bred to hide pain better than any other breed, I would suggest a vet visit with the anticipation of x-rays.

In the mean time, I would suggest to not let him jump up and down from anything. If you have a crate, put him in it. Vertebral problems are nothing to mess with, he could become paralyzed if this is indeed the problem.
