pressure in face eight weeks after a root canal
Hi there,
I had a root canal on back tooth (one next to a molar) eight weeks ago. The dentist has treated it 3 times and it has a temporary crown on it. Since the tooth was first worked on I developed neuropathic pain all over my face and I am now taking neurontin and amitripilyn. My doctor is convinced the nerves in my face are irriatated and I should not get the tooth pulled. I still feel pressure in my face above the tooth which extends through my cheekbone and to my eye. The dentist, who is very thorough and kind, as x-rayed the tooth and examined all my teeth and is at loss at to what the problem is... this past week the pressure has been getting worse and I now think I should get the tooth pulled, despite what the doctor and dentist recommend. My dentist wants to send me to a specialist but it will take at least a month to get an appt. So tired of pain and worry. Any thoughts?

The decision is yours but I would kindly recommend you have it pulled; there is just no fooling with a tooth like this and trying to manage the pain for the sake of having a crown and trying to keep a tooth. You are not going to miss a back tooth.

Well, it is a visible tooth as I only have one molar left up there. But that really doesn't bother me... I just wonder why everyone is so hell bent on saving this tooth. My doctor says I will still have this pain even if I get the tooth removed. So hard to know what to do and I basically have one day left for 2 weeks to decide. Thanks so much for your advice though I appreciate you taking the time.

It actually sounds like nerve damage. Possibly you should be seeing a neurologist.

I have just decided the tooth is coming out. That way I will know for sure if there has been nerve damage and I can move on from there. Thanks again.

So, tooth is out in a 2.5 hour procedure and the dentist couldn't get the root tip as it was too close to the sinus cavity... I wonder is that why I was having so much pressure and pain in the sinus cavity? Anyway other than being very sore from the tooth extraction (it wasn't fun) the pain and pressure in my face is gone. So, so far so good. And it really isn't all that noticeable. Thanks for your help and I will post again to let you know what happens with all this nerve pain.

Yes, pressure and pain in the sinus cavity because the root was so long.
Thanks for the up date. Will you still get a referrable to a neurologist.
