J-1 two year tax exemption rules.
I was wondering if someone could clear up some of the specifics surrounding the rules of the two year tax exemption on a J-1 visa.

    - My visa has a period longer than two years on it, but I intend to stay only for two years. Will this affect my eligibility for the tax exemption?

    - In the rules it says 'If the individual's visit to the United States is longer than 2 years, the exemption is lost for the entire visit'. But when can I return to the US for a (tourist) visit? If I return while the J-1 is still valid, will I be considered returning under the J-1 and have to pay the taxes I've earlier been exempted from?

    Thanks!

If you return under a valid tourist visa, that tourist visa takes precedence.

To be sure, just have the J-1 visa canceled when you leave.
