How to remove a roommate who will not leave
My ex-boyfriend is living in my apartment in Michigan which is rent controlled by income. He was never supposed to live there but he moved in when I did anyway. If I go to the landlord I will be evicted for his presence there, but he will not move out or help pay rent and I am afraid of his rages. He controls my every move and insists that I give him money and, although I am the only one working, he tries to control what I spend. The police will not help, they only offer to take me to a shelter, and the housing authority will not allow me to evict him because I am not the owner of the property. Please, what can I do?

I think you will have to go through the landlord and take your chances. Just tell the landlord the guy is there against your will and will not leave. Tell the landlord you want the guy out. Describe that it is an abusive relationship and that while you let him stay there briefly, it was never your intention for him to move in. He was only a guest but now refuses to leave.

The landlord can evict him and also get the police to throw him out because he does own the property. He can show the lease to the police including the part that does not permit you to have anyone else move into the apartment.

You might get in some trouble, but that's going to happen anyway if this guy stays there. I would not think you would get evicted since you're trying to get the guy out and he's basically squatting in your apartment without your permission. You also need to get a restraining order against this jerk. And don't be letting any future people move in with you - honor your agreements with other people, especially when they are trying to help you with a rent-abated apartment!

Unfortunately I have already burned that bridge with the landlord. I went to them when the housing people would not help and asked them to evict him. They gave me two weeks to get him out or I would be evicted. I ended up telling them that he was gone in order to save my home. I have no ablility to move due to the upfront cost of an apartment plus I don't make enough money to afford an apartment that is not rent abated. I realize that some of this is my fault but I moved here in order to get away from him and never intended for him to follow me and move in. I am TRAPPED!
