My rope just broke on my weed trimmer, Snapper S31BC. Any ideas on how to replace it? It is enclosed in a housing. Cannot find anyone in the Baton Rouge area to work on the thing. Thanks

I got all the way to the clutch assemly and couldn't figure out how to take it off. To find someone in your area that works on it you can call 1-800-554-6723 for customer assistance. It will also give you a website to buy parts and a manual but don't ask them any ?'s on how to work on it because they won't tell you. It's Classified

I have the same problem. I also got all the way to the clutch assembly. My next effort is to buy a clutch puller and try to remove the clutch. I believe that will be the final step in getting to the puller.

No, No, No. You Do Not Need A Clutch Puller. There Is However A Screw Down In The Center That You Have To Remove. This Requires A Lot Of Sweat, Blood And Patience, Oh, Did I Mention Patience. Then The Fun Part Is Putting The Darn Thing Back Together.

If This Is The Weed Eater That I Am Thinking Of, We No Longer Put Pull Ropes Back In Them. We Are Nice And Send The Customer To Our Competition.

I have the screw out, but the clutch still will not pull off. That is why I thought a clutch puller would loosen it from the shaft.

Are you indicating that even after I get it off, it is going to be close to impossible to rewind with a new rope?

You BETCHA!! It is difficult at best to get the spring and rope spool back down into the neck of the trimmer. Unless of course you have 6 tweezer size hands, just kidding, but seriously, WE NO LONGER WILL WORK ON THESE TO REPLACE THE PULL ROPE! Good luck , again these comments are mine from many a hours of trial and error, the books and training is not always as the REAL world presents itself. And this also refers to a trimmer that I THINK you are referring to. It may be a different one.

I figured this out guys, you do NOT need to remove the metal pulley. Look where the old old string was attached to the white pulley (there is another attachment point) now spin it around until you see a scoop looking spot with a hole in the center of the pulley.
(Not the notched section.)
Thread your rope through there, then use a hook, paper clip, whatever to get the end out. Tie a secure knot and pull it back out by the other end. Then simply wind it up and rotate it around to the hole in the housing, thread it through and attach the handle. Of course figure out if you're rotating it the right way before putting the handle on.

Outstanding answer johnny. Was about to trash this weedeater due to poor customer self repair configuration. Still will eventually but at least got it running again. Thanks for the help!

The clutch assy is threaded used vise grips to hold shaft and channelocks to turn clutch assy then it was easy to remove housing.
