    Teeth problems
Hello. My name is Cheryl. And I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled about 2 months ago. Where the tooth was has healed well. But there was an infection where the root of the tooth was. The dentist got me on antibiotics but the infection hasn't gone away.. I'm not sure if the infection is part of my problem but it feels like part of my jaw bone is sticking out of my gum where the root of the tooth would be. Its kind of hard to explain... If I run my tongue over it it feels like something sharp is sticking out. It has cut threw the gum but I can't really see what it is. I have been trying to leave it alone so it doesn't get worse.. I haven't gone back to the dentist only because I just noticed this about an hour ago... Thought I'd ask someone before I went to the doctors... If anyone has an idea of what could be wrong please reply... :) Thanks.

What exactly are you asking? You do realize that you can't get a diagnosis over the internet, right? Are you asking if you should go back to the dentist? If so, than yes, you should.

So you're looking for a list of possible things that could be wrong?

It's a long list. Are you sure you want guesses? Wouldn't you rather know exactly what's going on?

Well, it would be nice to know some possibilities...
Its 1:17 am and I have to work in the morning so I won't be able to see a doctor till Monday...
So until I can actually talk to a doctor about what's going on yeah, I'd like a few possibilities of what may be wrong... If you can't help me that's fine... I'm not asking for someone to tell me exactly what is wrong... I know that isn't possible.. But any information is good information to me...

There are really so many possibilities.

It could be that the infection is causing this. The fact that the infection hasn't gone away after 2 months is a concern. It could be that the wound has not healed properly. The list really is very long.

If it hurts, and it's bothering you, I would suggest taking a pain reliever like advil or tylenol, putting a cold ice pack on it (a bag of ice works well) and making an appointment for first thing Monday morning.

I realize that you're worried about this, and I am sorry, but really the only thing anyone online can do is guess. We can give you all the possibilities, but in the end you'll still have the issue you're having, and you'll still have to go to the dentist on Monday. You won't be any better off than you are now, not at all. So get some rest, take the medication if you're in pain, use the ice pack, and make the appointment.

I do hope the issue gets resolved soon, and I wish you all the best. You're lucky, I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once, and had an infection in two of the spots, in one spot the stitches reopened and left a gaping hole. I had issues for 1/2 a year and even had to go in for more surgery. Don't let that scare you, that was my experience, which has nothing to do with yours. Everyone is different.

    Good luck.
