Hello,
We plan to file MFJ for our federal tax. Wife works in MA and Husband has income
From MA source, so can file as non resident MFJ for MA tax. Husband does not work, so no tax filing needed for NC, and NH has no income tax so no filing there either. The question is, what address to use to establish the different residencies ?

Do not want to pay NH interest income tax for husbands MA source income. Which comes from % of shares and dividents of family owned business now sold in 2012.

Also we would like to make a tax payment to Fed & MA to cover taxes we will owe come April, do we just mail in a payment as we don't know how much we'll need to pay yet. Thanks

Assuming you live in New Hampshire, you will file as a non-resident for Massachusetts and pay taxes ONLY on MA income earned in Massachusetts. Same logic applies to North Carolina.

ALL income earned (regardless of the source) is subject to whatever taxes New Hampshire assess.

I found this on NH site. Saying if spouse lives in another state... not sure if I would have to do 50% on $$$ that is to him for shares in the family business? Check made out only to him, and 1099 only done in his name.

Also still don't know what address to put on FED and MA returns to show that we are at different States?

No. If one spouse is not a resident, the resident spouse shall file a return alone and report his or her interest and dividend income, and 50% of the interest and/or dividends from jointly held investments.

Look at the answer. If you file JOINTLY, ALL income must be reported.

The only way to avoid this is to file Married Filing Separately.
