Sometime Girlfriend?
I've been dating a guy who lives 6 hours away for a year. Over the past year, we've visited each other every few months. At times in between visits, he has indicated that he wanted to see me more often (at least once a month) and even suggested living together, perhaps jokingly, during the weeks before his most recent visit two weeks ago. In the weeks before his last visit, he called and emailed much more than he ever had before. However, he postponed his visit by a week to attend the funeral of an old friend. During the week between the funeral and his visit, he contacted me much less than before, emailing only a few times and not calling at all. During his visit, he said that he had been upset following the funeral. He saw his exwife at the funeral and talked about her constantly during the second night of his visit. I didn't want to let him know how upset and hurt I was by this, but I did let him know that I liked his idea of seeing each other more often. He then indicated that he preferred seeing each other every few months and referred to me as his sometime girlfriend. I got upset and he said I was paying too much attention to his use of the word "sometime." He left a day early due to my being upset. He emailed me the day he got home and said his visit had been memorable with a smilely face, but I was still hurt so I took 5 days to respond with a pleasant, superficial email. He emailed me back promptly with a pleasant, superficial email of his own, but I haven't responded in the week since. I still care for him, but cannot proceed as a "sometime" girlfriend. What should I do?
