Sorry, but NJ doesn't "do" your taxes. You have been paying taxes to NJ because that's the state where you lived and worked previously. But now you are a GA resident, and consequently you pay GA income tax instead of NJ income tax. Not a big deal. The only thing to keep straight is that in the year you move you are a part-year resident of NJ and a part-year resident of GA, so you have to file part-year returns with both states. Then the following year you can forget about having to file an NJ tax return at all.

However, if your employer is NJ-based, you MUST make sure that they do NOT withhold NJ income taxes, but rather Georgia income taxes.

Otherwise, you will have to file a NJ tax return to get a total refund, then turn around to pay the Georgia income taxes for which you ARE legally liable.

I know that I have to file state returns for both. My question is CT took out $1,950 in state taxes, and MA only took out $193. Do I have to pay Ma income tax even if I worked in CT for the full year? Thank you for any help you can give me on this.
