    Plumbing questions
Last night after flushing the upstairs toilet, it sounded like water was rushing through all of the drain pipes in the house at the same time. None of the toilets were running and everything seemed okay, excepet it sounded like our house was going to implode with water in the walls! At the cut-off valve, which is a clear pipe, we could see water running the opposite way it usually does, and these pipes were hot!. This is where water enters our house from the city water system. I checked everyplace water could run or drain, and could find nothing amiss. I also check the outside connection, which appeared to be fine. Giving up for the night, we just cut the water off, This morning, the same thing happened when I cut the water on, but so far it has stopped, The hot and cold water seem to be running all right, but the cold water is pretty dirty. Any ideas on what happened and what, if anything, we need to do?

we could see water running the opposite way it usually does,
This could only happen if the city main lost pressure and the water in the main began to flow backward into the pumping station. Call your Water Department and check. Good luck, Tom
