    Ceiling fan trouble
I had someone replace a ceiling fan with a lght. I have a wall switch that controls the light and fan separately. Problem, when he finished the light switch turned the light on and the fan on high. The fan wall control did not work. He did have an extra red wire that he capped off. Can I fix it?? Helpppp

Your handyman made a mess of this installation. There are not spare wires if you know what you are doing. Call an electrician instead of this handyman. I can't tell you how to fix his mistakes without seeing the wiring. Who knows what he did. There is one correct way to install but a million ways to do it wrong.

It may be a fairly simple fix. Shut the breaker off. Pull the plate on the wall. Chances are you will find 2 cables in the box, one with black, white and bare, and one with black, white, red, and bare. There may be a second black, white, bare cable that goes to feed something else on the circuit. The black wire from one cable should connect to both the light switch and the fan control. The whites should all be connected, and bares all should be connected together plus to the green screw on the switches and to the box if metal. Note which color of wire is connected to the other terminal of the light switch and the fan control. Now, pull the fan off its box. It should have a black, white, maybe blue or red, and bare or green. The whites should be connected together and the bares and any green together plus to the box. Connect the black, to black, and the red to the red or blue. If you don't find what I said you should find, post back.

You shouldn't have paid the guy until it was working right. The guy should be made to come back and make it right. You may be safer never letting him in your house again. I would let other know about his poor work.
