Court judgement
I was recently contacted by a collection agency stating that they were going to get the police to collect money owed by seizing personal property -bank accounts-garnish wages-destroy my credit if I did not pay$8100-they would accept $4000-original debt they said was $5000.I have not received any contact about the judgement. They said last contact was 2003.What can I do?

Where?
In general a collection agency cannot threaten Police action, and the agency can be reported to the State Attorney General.
You don't have to talk to them. Go to your local Courthouse and check for judgments against you.

While they can ruin your credit, that's about all they can do. If the debt is more than 6 years old. Its is probably past the Statute of Limitations so they can't use legal means to collect.
On the other hand, if the debt is valid, you have a moral obligation to pay. So you may think about accepting their settlement, but not before you are sure you want to.

1. Pay the debt.
2. Try to negotiate the added penalties and interest directly with the company (often not possible once it's sold to a collection agency).
3. Hire a 'debt reduction company' for a fee. They are better at negotiating, but take the first 1, 2, or 3 payments as fee.

Please stop posting a new question. If you have any follow-up respond to this thread. Your threads have been merged.
The SOL for NC is probably 3 years ( http://credit.about.com/od/statuteof...ns/g/ncsol.htm). So if suit hasn't been started by this point it is likely to have past.

Please don't change your original question after people have responded. It leads to confusion.

Since they are threatening police, they are lying, if you owe the money you can not stop garnishment of wages if they actually have a judgement, they don't or they would just get the money, they would not threaten, You hang up and stop talking to them, then be ready of court if they do take you to court
