Central air not cooling took out batteries

I took out the batteries from the thermostat while it was running and now it won't work

I have had my Thermostat set at roughly 77 degrees. However, my house (1200 sq ft) will not cool down. It seems to stay in the 80's. The vents are blowing air fully, but it's not cold air (not warm either). I cannot find anything frosted over. The filter is new as of a week ago and the old one...
