Okay so here is my problem. I have a natural, very dark brown hair color. Black if you will. I am aiming for a light brown color. Like around the same color as L'oreal Feria's Downtown Brown or Brownstone. And, I am wondering if it is possible to dye my hair from black to that specific shade of brown without using the double process (bleach - toner - dye). If it is possible to JUST use the dye, will it bring out an ugly orange color? If it does, is there anyway to avoid the orange with just using a dye with my hair color?

If it is not possible to avoid the double process , is it possible to skip the toner part?

P.S: What exactally does "brassiness" mean?

If you apply a permanent color on black hair, it will result in red/orange shade. In order to go from black to light brown or dark blonde, bleaching and toning will be required. However, a professional hairstylist may be able to achieve your desired color with a one-step coloring process by using a higher strength volume developer with an ash base color. If going to the salon isn't an option, then try using Loreal True Brunettes. It's suppose to lighten dark hair a few shades without the brassiness. But, you could end up with some reddish tones in your hair. Your best bet is to have it professionally done.

Brassiness is used to refer to hair that is overly yellow, red or orange in tone.

I would actually not use the box for brunettes because my hair color is the same as yours and I wanted to go lighter which turned my hair orange reddish instead of the color I desired. If you have a Sally's Beauty Supply around your area get a strong volume developer and toner to get the hair you want. There is no short cut to dying your hair the way you want it because it just turns out bad.

After stripping a very dark fron allmost black how then can I get a light shade of brown for the base and many blond high lights how do I do this thanks
