    12 years and trying
I am a 31 year old healthy female. At age 15 I gave birth to my first and only child. At 19 I got pregnant again. That pregnancy turned out as a blighted ovum (empty sac). I opted to let the miscarriage proceed naturally but gave into the pressure from my doctor to have a D&C after a week passed and I still hadn't miscarried. Things went wrong during the procedure and I hemorrhaged. A few days later I was released from the hospital. Being that I was so young I didn't think to ask "What next? Will I still be able to have children in the furture?" That was about 12 years ago and I'm still not pregnant. I'm now married to a man who has 3 children from his first marriage. We met about a year after I lost my second pregnancy. We have been trying for so long and each month we are let down. I changed doctors and found out that I still ovulate and things "look" good. I know I need to undergo fertility testing but my doctor doesn't seemed to concerned about it and I'm terrified of what they may find... that maybe I'm so badly scarred from the D&C that I will not be able to conceive and I just don't think I could bare that. My question is... Can a D&C leave me scarred enough to prevent pregnancy? I have also noticed that the older I get, the lighter my periods are. I'll only spot for a few minutes here and there for a day, sometimes less. But my doctor said as long as I still have a period that everything is fine. How can that be right? Its hardly a period at all and it makes predicting ovulation tricky.

May I ask if you're seeing a regular OB or a specialist?

If you're not already, I suggest seeing a fertility specialist. The D&C *could have* caused permanent damage, but it could also be that something else is going on. Your husband has children, but there is also a chance he could have an issue. Really, only further testing can tell you the answers. Having a period is a good sign, but that doesn't provide enough information.

I would be questioning why your periods have changed recently - that could indicate hormonal imbalance or other things, many of which could be easily "fixed".

You're doctor doesn't seem concerned... but obviously you are, which in my book is reason enough to find another doctor who will be a better help to you.

    Good luck
