U.S. Citizen Filing with J1 Visa Spouse
My wife and I were married on Dec. 20, 2006. She entered the country in January 2006 on a J1 Visa, and she earned a nominal income working as an Au Pair. We are in the process to changing her status to Permanent Legal Resident, but I'm not sure how we should do our 2006 taxes (file jointly? Claim her as a U.S. Resident? Etc). Can anyone shed some light on our situation? Thank you!

Are you a US citizen? If so, it would most likely make sense for her to elect to be a resident and file jointly with you.
