EtG testing question for Dr. Bill
Last night I had 5 beers between 8pm and 9pm (Friday night). I have my first meeting with my probation officer at 10:15 Tuesday morning. I have not been told what I am going to be tested for, or if I am going to even be tested, but I have the following questions regarding the possibility of ETG testing...

    1. From 9pm Friday to 10:15 am Tuesday there will be roughly 82 hours of abstinence. Am I at any risk to fail this test?

    2. If I am on probation for a drug offense, what is the chance that I will even be ETG tested? I am on probation in a large city, so I assume they save the ETG testing for the alcohol-related offenses... I could be wrong, however.

    3. I know about the various substances that contain ethanol and can trigger the ETG test. Are the probation officers required to tell you to refrain from consuming or using products that contain ethanol, so as to not set off the test? It seems that if they were not to tell someone not to use hand sanitizer, then they did, and subsequently failed an ETG test it would not be fair to haul them off to jail.

Thanks in advance and have a nice night,

    TJ

At that time there will be no EtG in your system from the 5 beers.

I have no knowledge what any given agency tests for. There are no uniform standards for use of the test or interpretation of the test and there are no regulations or oversight of it's use.

It is recommended that tested subjects be advised to avoid alcohol containing products such as you mention hand sanitizers. Adequate information would be a catalog size advisory containing thousands of listings.

The latest advisory issued by SAMHSA on use of the test is located here. This agency has no regulatory authority over the test so the recommendations need not be followed:

    Advisory, Revised Spring 2012

You might also want to check Dr Greg Skipper's site. It contains more detailed and helpful information.

    Ethylglucuronide

Finally, in direct relation to court monitoring The Drug Court Judicial Benchbook carries some brief information at (p. 135). >LINK

    All advisory. No regulations apply.

Thank you very much! So should I be measuring from the last drink I take or the point when my BAC is 0? I actually miscalculated and there is 85 hours of abstinence, but about 82-83 hours from when my BAC is 0.

    Thanks again!

At that time span it is of no consequence.
