How do I find out what my father left me before he passed.
My father Passed away 2006 I am his youngest child and he told me I had an inheritance and all his records were on his computer before he passed. When I arrived at his home my aunts and uncles claimed that his best friend took the computer and all my fathers documents in the trunk of the car he had loaned my father to drive, and that his best friend wasn't answering the phone. My aunt said there was no way to give my father a proper burial because if they could'nt recover the missing files. My father's best friend never came to the memorial service. My Father was cremated. My father was a military veteran, he had life issurance. And he was waiting on backpay from his disabilty he was 60 years old at the time of his death. I was 17. I used free search services online but nothing is coming up for his name in chicago IL. I do not know where to start. Someone Help Me.

You should probably contact a probate lawyer as soon as possible. Google "Probate Lawyer" with the parenthesis and add your city and state in the search engine. It should populate some lawyers that work in your area in the field you need.

Since it was in 2006, I don't know what can be done as I am not aware of the statute of limitations on such situations.

You can apply to the probate court to be appointed personal representative (or executor". If you don't have a will your father's estate would still be administered by a personal representative.

Then subpoena the "best friend" and depose him regarding what he did with the computer and any other records. You can force him to reveal what he knows, and can get a court order if he refuses to obey the subpoena.

As Sintdrgn told you, it would be best if you had an attorney represent you in this regard.
