Ok, the movie starts with the 2 boys and their mother. They never knew their father but one day he just shows up out of the blue. He was stranded on an island for a long time and has finally rescued. I don't recall him talking much, he was very aloof. He wanted to take the boys on a road trip to the island however one (or both) of the boys felt awkward about it because he didn't feel comfortable around the dad.

I remember the car getting stuck in the mud and lots of rain.
Um, something about a diner and the older boy acting out.
They get to the island in a little boat, but everyone is unhappy.
The real reason the dad wanted to go back was for something important he left behind. Treasure?
The dad and older boy get into an argument, he ends up chasing the boy up the big tower on the island. The dad falls off and dies. The boys have to drag the dad all the way back to the boat somehow and take him back to the mainland.

I think about this movie A LOT but I can't remember the name. If it helps I saw it about 1-2 years ago on netflix and it was definitely made recently. Thanks for any help!
