I have a submersible rock well, our water turns off and we turn pump braker off, wait a few minutes then turn braker back on. Sometimes water will run for a while, then cut back off. This has been happening off and on for ten years. We've replaced the pump in the past. Just replace the twenty gallon tank with a 52 gallon tank. There was a lot of rust and build up in the t-pipe. Replace the t-pipe and pressure switch. Water ran for a couple of showers, one load of laundry and flushing of the toilet then cut off. I flipped braker off, waited turned back on and now there is water. Tired of wondering if we're going to have water from one minute to the next. Any suggestions? By the way it's been raining a lot lately so I wouldn't think we're out of water.

Well it sure sounds like when you make a heavy draw it lowers the water table down to where you're out of water. Then you turn off the breaker and it replenishes itself. How deep is your well? Can you drop a line down and check the difference in levels between the time it's working and the time it's not? Let me know, Tom

The well is 400 feet deep, the pump stops at 390. I guess what I don't understand is it will do this then may go months without any problems.

As far down as your pump is, it may be that rain is not the issue. Water at that depth might be affected by several other issues.

When the water stops, is your pump still running? If you can't tell, try feeling the wellpipe. There is generally a slight vibration in the pipe when the pump is on, though at 390' feet down, it might not be much. If the pump is cutting itself off, then the well is probably running out of water which causes a thermal protection switch in the pump to cut itself off until it cools. If that's the case, then you should be able to simply wait for five or ten minutes for it to reset itself.
