How much voltage on the battery or how bright are the headlights?
I don't understand "it wants to start, but won't turn over"
If it won't turn over, it will Never start, unless push started.
1 Do you hear any clicks?
2 Does the engine turn over, but won't run?

That is exactly what a weak battery does for a symptom in that grey area between stone cold dead and barely able to start the car.
If you can pull it out and take it to a Autoparts store and have it load tested by them... you might have your answer quickly.

If it cranks but won't start:
. Test all under hood and under dash fuses with a test light or multimeter.
. Check for codes.
. Verify that the timing belt didn't break or slip.
. Check for fuel. Can you hear the fuel pump run, when the ignition switch is turned to ON?
. Focus on the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor, if the problem persists.

Pulled the battery out. I read owners manual says use a 12 volt battery does it matter if the battery is bigger than the old battery but 12volt anyway. Does the size of the battery make a diffrence as long as the volts is the same.

Take the OLD battery to the store... and tell them what kind of car it is... if the battery is more than 4 years old.. odds are its bad...
If its bad when they test it... get what they tell you it needs... ASK THEM... there are different kinds for a reason... because yes it matters.

I agree with smoothy, get a New Battery that fits, for that car, It sounds expensive, but a Bad Battery leaving you Stranded at a bad time/place, plus putting your Alternator and Starter and Charging System with the extra load is not worth it.

If you need to know a good brand... I like Interstate, over 32 years using them rarely a problem... which ones do I hate... Exide and Motorcraft.

Car won't turn over with new starter on a 2002 pontiac grandam
[ 1 Answers ]
I have a 2002 pontiac grandam just replaced the starter after several people said I had a bad starter. I tightened everything back and now won't start, Its trying to turn over but doesn't sound like its catching like it should. Any suggestions on what to do next or to check would be great. Thank you
