My car had a smell of burning rubber coming out of the vents and it sounded like a fan belt broke. But I checked and nothing was visibly wrong. The engine seems to idle rougher than before. I am thinking it may be the water pump going, it is making a louder noise but not like grinding rocks yet?

You may want to check the timing belt, which drives the water pump. It would be a disaster, if it broke or slipped.
