Diabetic Dog Refuses to Eat? Help!
Hello, my 7 year old rottie was diagnosed with diabetes this past thursday and she has been doing remarkably well. At first it was way to high (28, I think) and it has come down a lot.

Now, my dog refuses to eat. She was never really comfortable eating when she wasn't at home and her vet says she cannot come home untill she regularly eats there. We have tried going there and making food in her dish to try to get her to eat yet she only takes about four bites.

They have tried giving her various canned food but she won't give it the time of day. Please help, I do not know what to do and I really want her to get better.

28 is actually really low, perhaps 280?
It is only natural for her Vet to want to be eating properly before she leaves, but if she continues to not eat then it will be difficult to implement a plan that will work for her.
Perhaps you and the vet could meet in the middle, taking her in for glucose checks before meals then back home for breakfast. Of course this would take a lot of your time in the beginning until she is regulated.
I would speak to the Vet, voice your concerns about the not eating while away from home and devise a plan that will work for her, you and her Vet.

My 14 year old Greyhound suffered from chronic renal failure and refused to eat anything other than treats. It made me crazy - different dog foods, canned & refrigerated - different "human food", my fridge was stuffed with chicken, beef.. even fish. Finally I couldn't stand it any longer and started blending a good healthy canned dog food for her in my food processor and then feeding her through a syringe. She still loved her treats, and I knew she was getting the nutrition she needed and it was causing us both a lot less stress.
Now my 10 year old Rhodesian has been diagnosed with diabetes and he is starting to refuse food first thing in the morning, which is a problem when it comes to the insulin. If I need to I will start syringe feeding him, too. It's simple and fast.
Hope it all works out for you both!
